The Eagles said---Welcome to the Hotel Caribe

Ok the Eagles, didn't say that. But it is the type of Hotel that you envision when you listen to the song. When I first booked this hotel I had serious reservations--pardon the pun--there were many reviews of people who found it charming and many people had rated it just above a cockroach hotel. My expectations were not very high for a whopping $40 a night. We found the hotel to be exactly that: a charming hotel with cockroaches, and geckos, and ants, and birds. It is a very charming 200 year old building. It once used to be a monastery and was turned into a hotel in 1900. The accommodations were nice, not Hyatt nice, but nice. Just don't think about the ants or cockroaches. The service is impeccable! NOT!!!!

A pigeon a top the Hotel Caribe sign. Little did we know how important pigeons would become in our lives in the next couple of days.
The architecture is really fun to look at when there is not a down poor.
The hotel has two toucan birds. Sydney has made friends with them. Sydney and the birds communicate with urt noises---I really don't know how to spell urt.
Collin from the second floor railing.
One of the few times we saw the sun in Merida thanks to TS Alex.
A view from our hotel room to the courtyard.
The arches of the hotel.
The massive trees outside of the hotels with the sunshine streaming through. This is also the place where ants (hormigas) attacked Jay and Natalie. They bit us, and made our feet feel like they were on fire. We really understand know why people might dance a bit with these guys in your pants.
